Can Air Purifiers capture Coronavirus?

When considering which Air Purifier to purchase to help fight Coronavirus there are four considerations;

1. Which type of filter is best.

2. The size of room.

3. The power of the filter measured in CADR.

4. Ongoing maintenance.

Medical experts across the globe mostly agree that Coronavirus itself is 0.125 microns. The viral droplets are released when people cough, talk, or breathe and sometimes are initially larger than that, up to around 1 micron.

You may have heard of HEPA filters. These filters are older technology and can capture around the 1 micron size but struggle with smaller values. In other words, most HEPA based filters may not be able capture the smaller droplets of Coronavirus. 

Conversely, the newer patented TPA technology used in Airdog has been tested down to .0145μm (microns) - easily enough to capture droplets that reach the purifier.  Charged particles are destroyed and the Ionic plate in Airdog kills bacteria and germs. Naturally for an Air Purifier to help protect your Air the droplets have to make it to the filter in the first place to be captured. It is widely acknowledged that the smallest droplets could travel further than initially thought, hence the recommended distance of at least 2m.  

That means an air purifier has to be capable of consistently drawing in enough air to reduce the amount of virus particles in the air. The faster an air purifier can cycle air through the filter, the better its chances of catching virus particles. You can see how fast an air purifier cleans the surrounding air by looking for its CADR (clean air delivery rate) number on the packaging. 

CADR reflects, in cubic feet per minute, the volume of clean air that an air purifier produces at its highest speed setting. At lower speeds, the rate a machine is able to clean air decreases.  For example, the majority of HEPA filters have a CADR of around 300.   Airdog has a CADR of 470.   Another way to look at it is TEPA technology used in Airdog can make 8.5 total room changes of air in an hour compared with around 5 for HEPA.

One practical matter to consider, however, is that you may not want to run an air purifier on its highest speed setting (in order to achieve the highest CADR). Air purifiers can be quite loud, especially at higher speeds, and that can disturb the sick person’s sleep.  For that reason Airdog revs up and down based on its own reading of the air quality. There is no need for you to control it, it does it itself!

Maintenance of HEPA based filters can be expensive! Some charge €85 for new cartridges and at their peak they could need changing every 4-6 months. Airdog's filter is washable in a few minutes saving you money and time. 

Last words - Even the most efficient air purifiers can’t prevent some droplets from landing on surfaces, where they can live for hours or even days according to early research.  So to help prevent the spread of the virus in your house, you should of course clean your property/business and wash your hands frequently too.
